Mini Lights - Learning The Design And Setup Of The Three Wire Strings Lights
Single string lights assist to decorate celebrations, special events, and holidays. Trying to learn their 3-wire, 120-volt-alternating-current (VAC) assemblages can be challenging with no foreknowledge. Actually, it is fairly easy. Here is how they are designed and assemble.
Mini string tring lights produced today.
Numerous lengths of mini string lighting (from 15-to-150-feet) are open to everyone today, each one holding a separate number of clear or colored mini-bulbs. However, latest attempts to standardize the manufacture of these types of light strings has centered on making the 50-bulb units that can either be used alone as one string, or can be pre-made further into 100-to-150-bulb strings. Each complete string whatever its length has an electrical plug at both ends like an extension cord. This standardization sounds to be accurate both for the older 3-millimeter-diameter tube-shaped incandescent lights (with their filaments covered within the bulbs) and the more recent LED types.
At this time, the newer LED strings are more luxurious than the incandescent ones, but they are more efficient than the filament types by using a lesser amount of electricity. But then, the manufacturing of the shorter light strings of either kind having lower than 50-bulbs is still done, and they can be found in the department stores. But, they are not a significant part of the current bulk production of mini-lights.
Thus, each full-length chain of any bulb-number will carry a male plug at one tip and a female plug at the opposite end. At the same time, these plugs are made so the individual strings could be stacked (two or three of them blocked piggyback into each other at each end making the total string longer without having causing electrical failure. The male plug of every string is also with two small 3-amp buss fuses within it, one for each one of its two main 120-volt wires. But these fuses will blow if the stacked strings get too long or if too much wattage is drawn by them.
Mini-light-string model and assemblage.
Basically, two of the wires on any three-wire mini-light string takes the household 120-volts of your electricity from one end of the string to the other end similar to the method any extension cord does. The so-called third wire of the string keeps all of the mini-bulbs and their sockets in succession just a few inches apart. This so-called third cord supporting the bulbs is in turn connected to each of the two120-volt cables in parallel.
That is, one end of this bulb wire is linked to the first of the two120-volt wires at one end of the entire string. Its other end is connected to the second 120-volt wire at the opposite end of the set further down the same string. For a 100-bulb series, the next set of 50-bulbs is connected to the two 120-volt wires in the same manner further down the string from the first set, where it performs separately from the first set. The completed string can be from 20-to-50-feet long, depending on the spacing between the bulbs.
Another benefit of these parallel connections is the electrical energy itself continues to flow through the primary two wires from end plug to end plug, if one or both bulb sets fall short for any reason. For this reason, when a 100-bulb light string begins to show unlit bulbs, these defective bulbs could appear in one or both sets. For instance, one 50-bulb set could have all or maybe few of its lights not effective, while the second set could show all of its bulbs lit up okay since each set operates separately from the other one. Since the power is still flowing in the latter example (several lights continue to be working), some of the bulbs in the failing set must be replaced.
