How To Effectively Conquer Panic Attacks

I am a sufferer of depression and panic attacks. It requires everything I have each day in order to get up and be relatively productive. Although everything appears to be well with my life, in reality it's really a day to day survival with minimal thought of actually getting healthier. What I hope for is just getting through the day. It's in this mindset that I offer the following guidelines. Bear in mind I'm not a physician and everyone should seek treatment if only to verify that you're not crazy!

Panic attacks can happen anytime of the day or night. If you have ever been so fearful and out of control, then you've probably had a taste of exactly what a panic attack can be like to the average sufferer. Ever feel as though you were in imminent danger and had to flee? That is exactly what a panic attack feels like. It comes on strong, frightens the bejesus out of you, and it's gone

Here are a few strategies on how to cope.

1. Participate in Your Treatment

Don't sit back and wait for relief to come by itself! You need to remain active and tuned in to the mind and body's reactions to treatment. You should be ready and willing to ask any and every question and to address every concern you have with your doctor. Open lines of communication will enhance the possibility of control and success.

2. Be Patient

Despite the fact that many patients respond within weeks or sometimes even days to treatments for panic attacks, nobody responds identically. Besides, no known treatments for panic and anxiety work instantly. Be prepared to spend a minimum of a full two months immediately after your preliminary course of treatment before you begin judging its effectiveness. If you still haven't experienced the improvement you were looking for, you can always work with your medical professional to modify your treatment plan then.

3. Be Alert To Side Effects

If part of your treatment requires medication, you will likely have to be alert and provide a lot of feedback to the health care provider until the dose and type of medicine is determined. Be sure your doctor details to you the adverse reactions you might have to expect. Usually they get quite a bit easier to tolerate with time but it's critical you are aware of what to expect. Your medical professional may likely begin lowering your dosage, or seeking alternatives if the side effects are pronounced or cannot be tolerated.

4. Join A Panic Disorder Support Group

If misery loves companionship, then a good source of support, relief and information for those who suffer the pain of anxiety attacks can be found in the support group. Now I'm a huge fan of support groups because they tend to validate problems instead of focusing on fixing or coping with them. I do recognize however that many people find great comfort and support in these communities and for those people, please attend and enjoy. Most attendees will be talking about their experiences, their treatments and coping suggestions.

Just keeping these tips in mind and putting them to use for the duration of your treatment may help make you feel much better and enhance your chances of the treatment being effective.
